Reagins earned Angels GM job through faith, hard work

TEMPE, Ariz. -- It was 1975 when a standout basketball player from Watts entered Tony Reagins' life and his small family home in Indio, Calif. The 18-year-old man, attending a nearby college, befriended the 8-year-old boy, who'd had few African-American role models since his father's death.

"I called him 'Starchild,' " says C.D. Jackson, who at the time was dating Tony's oldest sister, Pam. "He had that bright personality, always inquisitive. ... His personality was golden."

Dear Jody

My first mistake was watching the TV program, "The Moment of Truth." When I first saw that program, I thought how wonderful it would be - and great fun - to base a party on that game, a party that I was planning for Valentine's Day. My partner "Tom" and I have four male couples as friends - and one lesbian couple. We worked hard to get couples for friends so that we could support our relationship with others who wanted to have and worked on long-term relationships. This was our way of getting support for us, instead of having life and people trying to break us up. Up until Valentine's Day, I think this was a good plan.

First, in case you haven't seen that program, let me tell you some basics about it. A person comes on and is asked all kinds of personal questions. The person has been already asked these questions earlier, having had a lie-detector test so that it is known if he is telling the truth or not, but apparently he doesn't know if he's caught lying or not.

Constantine Maroulis: Cheese Whiz

I see this YouTube-equivalent [video] of her and I say, ''Look at all the buzz this girl's getting, look at all the views, she's got the paparazzi after her...'' She's a good girl, though. She's like Hilary Duff but with Paris Hilton exposure. So I see potential and I want to produce her record. And, of course, a romance ensues.

You perform your songs on the show as well; do you give her the staple Constantine stare? Definitely. It might have been written into one of the stage directions. The script said, ''Constantine gives her 'the look.''' I laughed out loud, of course. I take my work really seriously, but that's funny s--- when you see that written into the script.

Certainly it must be easier to gaze toward Phoebe than Simon Cowell.Yeah, a little bit. Although he might have liked it.

From flappers to pop princesses, Milan turns full circle

Extravagant designs and iridescent shades were omnipresent as retro styles, from the low-waisted dresses of the Roaring Twenties to the psychedelic oversized prints of the 1970s, set the runways alight.

Flamboyant Italian designer Roberto Cavalli said his 2008-2009 autumn-winter collection was for young girls who rummaged through attics, junk shops and old vinyl records to seek individual style.

A thumbs up from Generation Now would be his greatest compliment, he said.

"I love it when a little girl of 14-15 says 'How do you do it Mr Cavalli? You make me feel like a rock star,'" he said.

Flamingos served as the leitmotif on blouses and flowing organza dresses were splotched with blobs of peach, tangerine and emerald green, enlivening an already eye-popping floral backdrop.

The Impossible Art of Deciphering Manuscripts

After a brief e-mail exchange, my publicist confirmed that she'd solicited Grady Harp's review.

I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, but I had imagined Amazon's customer reviews as a refuge from the machinations of the publishing industry: "an intelligent and articulate conversation ... conducted by a group of disinterested, disembodied spirits," as James Marcus, a former editor at the company, wrote in his memoir, Amazonia: Five Years at the Epicenter of the Dot.Com Juggernaut. Indeed, with customers unseating salaried employees like Marcus as the company's leading content producers, Amazon had been hailed as a harbinger of "Web 2.0"—an ideal realm where user-generated consensus trumps the bankrupt pieties of experts. As I explored the murky understory of Amazon's reviewer rankings, however, I came to see the real Web 2.0 as a tangle of hidden agendas—one in which the disinterested amateur may be an endangered species.

Guerrero retains featherweight title

Guerrero reclaimed the vacant title in February 2007 with a TKO of Spend Abazi. Six of his last seven fights overall have ended with sudden stoppages.

Guerrero's wife, Casey, climbed into the ring for a post-fight hug after one of Guerrero's fights for the first time in more than a year. The mother of two was diagnosed with leukemia late last year, only days before Guerrero fought Martin Honorio in Tucson, Ariz.

While Casey was in the hospital back home in the Bay Area last fall, Guerrero -- who had barely slept in the previous week -- knocked out Honorio 56 seconds into the bout with one devastating punch.

Casey's leukemia was found to be in remission in late December, and she felt well enough to attend Guerrero's first fight since beating Honorio.

The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2007

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

"They are the nicest family," said Victoria, adding that Cruise never tried to introduce the Beckhams to Scientology. "They have their beliefs, but they have never, ever tried to press those on us. We're just, we're friends. We have a laugh with them. And they're just very kind wonderful people."

Something else that makes the Beckhams stand out in Hollywood? They have been married for eight years, and together for 10.

"I think that's great, and for the two of us to still be able to not just love each other but, but to really still laugh after so many years is really important," said Victoria.

Is this relationship forever? "Of course it is," said David. "We wouldn't have got married if it wasn't."

Bixler paces Pirates, 5-0, in opening exhibition

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Brian Bixler doubled, singled and walked in three plate appearances this afternoon in the Pirates' first game action of the spring, a 5-0 blanking of Manatee Community College before 2,102 at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla.

Bixler, the shortstop at Class AAA Indianapolis last season and likely again this season, had an RBI double to left as part of a four-run first inning. Ryan Doumit, Steve Pearce and Doug Mientkiewicz followed with one-out RBI singles.

Pearce and Mientkiewicz each had two hits.

PTC Dominates in Palm Springs

Five players from the Palisades Tennis Center traveled to Palm Springs for last weekend's USTA tournament and all five advanced to at least the semifinals.

Video: Slideshow on concussions in hockey

Kaminski lined up an unsuspecting opponent for a big hit in a game on Dec. 28, 1999, while playing for Orlando, but the guy saw him at the last second and jumped up.

"His elbow hit me right on the button and that was it for me," said Kaminski.

When he came home with a concussion, Megan thought he'd go to bed for 48 hours and return to normal, as he'd done before.

She couldn't have been more wrong.

The symptoms were long-lasting: insomnia, irritability, vertigo, sensitivity to light. He couldn't exercise because of headaches as soon as he got his heart rate up. His memory shot, he couldn't find his car after shopping for groceries. He'd forget his PIN number at the bank machine – it was his jersey number.

The game Kaminski worshipped brought him to his knees.
