Can Google conquer video?
In-stream video advertising may never be the same after Google gets done with it. Known for populating the web with countless text ads, Google has taken its AdSense program to the video screen, announcing that it will begin selling ads that appear inside videos on any site in its publisher network that serves more than one million video streams per month. Google, which began testing the pilot program back in May, announced the news on its AdSense blog. The program features InVideo ads -- a format Google developed on YouTube -- and text overlay ads that are contextually targeted based on signals that appear both in the video and on the page. While Google has limited the number of participants, a who's who of the web video world has already jumped on board.
WCC NEWS: Service celebrates WCC's 60th anniversary
Gathered in a church dating from the 12th century, the World Council of Churches seemed like a relative youngster as it celebrated its 60th anniversary Sunday 17 February. But His All Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, reminded the near-capacity congregation at Geneva's St. Pierre Cathedral that the WCC has accomplished much in its six decades. "The Council has provided an ideal platform where churches with different outlooks and belonging to a great variety of theological and ecclesiological traditions have been able to engage in dialogue and promote Christian unity, while all the time responding to the manifold needs of contemporary society", the Orthodox leader said, speaking in French. He acknowledged the challenges and "turbulent" periods in the Council's life, but said that dialogue resulted from those difficulties and has paved the way forward.
'Tony Blair sanctioned racist plot to murder Diana'
The driver, Henri Paul, who as acting head of security at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, was an employee of Fayed, was also killed in the crash. French and British police investigations both concluded the deaths were tragic accidents caused by their speeding driver, who was found to be drunk. Today Mr Al Fayed claimed that the blood samples from the driver upon which these conclusions were based were false. He said he had first become convinced of a plot when Lord Condon and Lord Stevens, two former commissioners of the Metropolitan Police, had failed to pass on a note from Lord Mishcon, the Princess’s lawyer, describing her fears that she would be assassinated. Previous witnesses at the inquests have refuted the idea that the Princess of Wales planned to marry his son, as well as the allegation, which he repeated today, that the Princess was pregnant with his grandson.
Authors celebrate golden age of doo-wop
The nonsense syllables that defined a genre were first heard in the Turbans' 1955 single When You Dance. Doo-wop - or, in the Turbans' long hand "doo-wop, be-dooby-dooby doo-wop" - gave a name to a specific strand of rock'n'roll that lacked the violence and anarchy of its close cousins, was more interested in the concept of perfect harmony, but is the exact sound that enters most folks' heads when they picture Anytown USA in 1958. It's no coincidence that "Cousin Brucie" Morrow's coffee table-crushing new book, Doo Wop: The Music, the Times, the Era has sidebars on diners, Sputnik, even Senator McCarthy; doo-wop has been regarded as the de facto soundtrack to America's 1950s since it informed the score to George Lucas's American Graffiti in the early 1970s. It's no coincidence either that the sound of the music is reverberating around London clubs such as the Beat Rocket, held in a lovingly re-created 1950s bowling alley, or Rock-A-Billy Rebels in East London.
Hayden likes ambitious guys
Hayden Panettiere has revealed what attracts her to a guy. "I have to be with someone who is very driven," admits the Heroes star in the April issue of Seventeen. "When they're not, it becomes difficult." The 18-year-old, who plays self-healing cheerleader Claire Bennet in the hit TV show, is rumoured to be dating Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli), although neither have confirmed the reports. "I need to learn more about myself because I'm a little confused at the moment. And I don't think I could ever fully give myself to somebody until I do," she adds. Despite her young years, Hayden seems to have worked out the secret to a successful relationship. She says: "I've figured out that the healthiest relationship is where you each have your own life, but they meet at a nice point in the middle.
