Hanks is mad, Powers is chagrined and Schumacher is just weird.THE GOOD: The late Master Sgt. Woodrow Wilson Keeble is the first member of any of the Sioux tribes to ever earn the Medal of Honor, the highest tribute our nation can bestow on a member of the military. It will be awarded to his family members on March 3 at the White House. After serving in World War II, where he was wounded in some of the most intense combat of the war at Guadalcanal, Keeble returned to service in the Korean War at age 34.On Oct. 20, 1951, he was near Kumsong battling the Chinese. With his fellow soldiers pinned down by heavy enemy gunfire Keeble — already wounded — made his way up a hill and single-handedly took out four machine- gun bunkers, killing nine enemy soldiers. During the assault, Keeble was hit multiple times, but he continued to fight, taking out two trenches of enemy troops, killing seven more riflemen and finally forcing the enemy to retreat.THE BAD: The award was given posthumously, more than 20 years after Keeble’s death in 1982 at the age of 65.

The legend of Hook Mitchell
Hook's here, Hook's here," people whispered, and it reminded me of how the kids on The Wire always murmur when Omar comes around. Hook was humble and laconic. "Pleased to meet you," he said upon introductions. We started our layup lines and I think all of us were curious how much he had left in the tank. After all, he was 39 and even the greatest leapers -- especially ones as short as Hook -- usually start to lose their jumping ability in their early to mid-30s. I couldn't tell whether he was trying or not, but he went up leisurely for one dunk and missed it. Maybe he was done. It wasn't until late in the first half that it happened. There was a steal and then a fast break. Hook got back on defense, running just behind an opposing player as he went up for a layup.
Spring Training: Spring of change starts for the Twins
Gardenhire reached across his desk, picked up a copy of the latest Sporting News and motioned to the magazine's cover boy. "He's right here," he said of Hunter, who is shown on the beach in a white Los Angeles Angels uniform, the familiar No. 48 on his chest. He studied the image for a moment. "Just doesn't look right, does it?" Gardenhire said. Everyone in the Minnesota clubhouse -- even the man running the show -- will have to adjust this year, as Minnesota transitions to life after Hunter, among others. Without the budget of American League rivals such as the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Tigers and Indians, Minnesota had little choice but to bid farewell to Hunter and lefty ace Johan Santana -- as well as Carlos Silva, another Twins staple -- in the past few months.

IT SEEMS THE furor over the film Baheb El-Cima isnt about to die down. At press time, the Prosecutor General's Office was still investigating a lawsuit filed by a number of religious leaders and Christian businessmen that could see the film pulled out of theaters. More alarming for those who follow free-speech issues: A second lawsuit filed against the film's director Osama Fawzi and producer Arabian Distribution Company. .
Mr. Right or no, it may be time to make yourself at home
Dating experts believe women who can afford to buy a home on their own shouldn't postpone a purchase until they find true love. But they allow that a fair number of women, including many traditionalists, would rather wait until they're hitched - or at least engaged - before they make a property purchase. "Some women hold back. To them, it doesn't seem natural to buy a house and settle down until after the man they love proposes. They're old-fashioned in that way," says Ellen Fein, co-author with Sherrie Schneider of "The Rules" books, a series of widely read primers on the art of capturing love and staying happily married (www.therulesbook.com). Fein and Schneider say women should hold out for true love and never gold-dig. Even so, they allow that some women - especially those living in high housing-cost areas - simply can't afford to buy a home on a single salary.
Sideshow: Lawyer: Remove Brit's dad
Legal maneuverings in the world of Britney Spears continue to wend their Byzantine way. First, a child custody hearing was continued yesterday after a closed-door meeting of her lawyers, ex-husband and conservators. "In the end, no change was made," court spokesman Allan Parachini said. Another hearing was set for Feb. 19. Then, attorney Adam Streisand, saying Brit had authorized him to speak for her, asked the court to remove James Spears, the Disturbed One's father, as conservator of her estate. That estate, Streisand said, is worth $40 million. He also said Brit was in the middle of a $17 million IRS audit with her record label. Streisand asked that the court name Northern Trust Bank and Howard Grossman, Brit's business manager, as conservators. The problem for Streisand - second cousin to Barbra the diva - is that the court isn't convinced he was properly retained by Britney.
Brasch Words
They have created fake news releases, bribed journalists, released secret information about a CIA agent in retaliation for her husband speaking out against the President's war in Iraq. They illegally hacked into confidential Democrat strategy files, illegally spied upon both American citizens and the United Nations, invaded innumerable Constitutionally-protected personal rights of privacy, suppressed freedom of expression, and instilled fear as a justification for its actions. Perhaps they should no longer be called "neocons," but Vegomatic Republicans, since they believe they have a divine right to slice, dice, and chop the Bill of Rights. Sanctimoniously proclaiming themselves piously religious and patriotic, they have forsaken both the Bible and the Constitution. Mr.
Hsieh blasts Ma for filing suit
Ma was indicted last February on charges of embezzling NT$11.17 million from a special allowance fund designated for his discretionary use while he served as Taipei mayor from 1998 to 2006. The funds in question are disbursed to cover the mayor's job-related expenses. While the court has acquitted Ma in the first and second trials on the grounds that he merely followed past practice and had no intent to embezzle, the special investigation team is still probing other corruption allegations against him. Among them are cases involving the three-in-one sale of the Broadcasting Corporation of China (sq), China Television Co () and the Central Motion Picture Corp (vq) to China Times Group subsidiary Jungli Investment Co (aRꤽq) in 2005 for NT$9.3 billion (US$286.7 million), and the party's sale of the Institute of Policy Research and Development building to Yuan Lih Construction Corp for NT$4.3 billion last year.
DEATH PENALTY: Moratorium Vote Leaves Deep Divisions
General Assembly culminated in this week's vote, where conflicting views on the legality and effectiveness of capital punishment made for a tense atmosphere. "The issue arouses a lot of strong feelings and that's what we saw among delegates at the meeting," Yvonne Terlingen, the Amnesty International's representative at the United Nations, told IPS. The draft resolution, which was co-sponsored by the European Union bloc and 60 other countries, still needs to be submitted to the 192-member General Assembly for a vote. If approved, it would be non-binding, but would carry moral weight. Diplomats said that the GA was widely expected to endorse the decision, possibly next month. "We are happy with the substantive majority of countries who voted for the resolution.
Nobody is better in this 'entertainment'
Tonight, the CW announces a spin-off of one of the most-loathed programs of 2007. ''Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious'' (at 9 on CW 11 and 57, TV-PG,D,L), a 10-episode talent contest/elimination to determine the membership of a new girl group. Robin Antin, the founder of the Dolls, is the judge and taskmaster here. She has the harsh, doomed look of a woman who has dedicated her life to luring preteens into the sleazy demimonde of burlesque entertainment. As if the whole Pussycat thing weren't hateful enough, ''Girlicious'' sets about pushing buttons right away, all the better to enrage, horrify or shame the parents still in the room. One Girlicious wannabe gushes that she's more into Girliciousness than Boyliciousness, and it takes her mother a while to get used to that notion.
