Sears settles oven lawsuit

Sears Holdings Corp. will install safety brackets on its stoves in millions of households or offer gift cards in settling an Illinois class-action lawsuit over the appliances' supposed propensity to topple.

Under an agreement signed off on last month by a Madison County judge, Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears will offer to fix all brands of its freestanding or slide-in kitchen ranges in as many as 3.9 million homes by bolting them to a wall or floor.

The deal covers Sears ranges sold from mid-2000 through last Sept. 18, when a judge granted the settlement temporary approval. The deal resolving the lawsuit dating to July 2004 also requires Sears to install safety brackets in newly purchased ranges for the next three years.

Hollywood Likes Obama

In the first, she asked for advice on what to do with footage she had compiled on a visit to the Darfur region. Included was a photo album with handwritten annotations. "I used each photograph to convey the enormity of the situation and the staggering statistics," she says. "And I thought the faces that I showed him spoke so eloquently." That communication also contained information about China's role in the crisis, she adds.

Farrow got no response. Then she read that Spielberg was going to be an artistic director of the games. "I wrote him a letter of conscience saying I hoped he knew all these things," she says. "I really suggested he think twice. And then when I didn't hear back, I had a vision of a box within a box within a box—that he has an office, and then there's a real office behind that and maybe a really real office after that and maybe three letters a month actually get to him.

The bag lady: Rebecca Hosking

I'm not going if they're not paying,' she tells me bluntly, 'it's really disorganised! I wouldn't have those people on my team!' (They must have eventually coughed up since, a few weeks later, I see her, calm and composed, being interviewed in front of a fish tank by Gavin Esler).

After just10 minutes in her company it begins to make sense why it had to be Hosking who somehow managed to galvanise an entire nation into action, inspire councils and traders and elicit applause from Gordon Brown. She is keen to play down her role but I suspect there is a small part of her that is quite enjoying it. (Certainly the town's traders, to whom she is 'Beck', treat her like she is a kind of unwitting hero, which she seems to enjoy.) 'My advantage is that I was born here, and so everybody in the town knew and trusted me.

Campaign starts for Kokoda heritage listing

Kokoda Track Authority executive officer Warren Bartlett said the PNG Government would meet officials from the heritage department over the listing.

But Nauro village locals support the bid of Australian miner Frontier Mining for an open cut mine because they say they are not seeing enough of the trekkers' fees the authority collects.

They have blocked the track because they are frustrated the PNG Government, allegedly under pressure from Australia, has not granted Frontier Mining an extension to an exploration licence.

Mr Bartlett said the track authority was trying to negotiate a compromise to get the track reopened.

"They all want the mining to get a fair go, to co-exist with the trekking," he said.

Frontier Mining officials were present when the Jack family clan felled a tree on their land to block the track, in front of local and Australian media.

Indiana Senate OKs pull-tabs in bars

Extraneous provisions inserted in the House about liquor liability insurance and advance deposit wagering at off-track betting parlors also were removed.

All they are asking for is a fair, level playing field, said Sen. James Arnold, D-LaPorte, who presented the bill on behalf of sponsor Sen. Robert Meeks, R-LaGrange, who has been ill this week.

He also went further, telling his colleagues to vote for the bill as thanks for previous campaign contributions.

I think each and every one of us needs to do a little bit of self-inventory on this issue and think back over our long history of politics how many times we have called upon these people to step forward for us in the way of donations, in the way of prizes, in the way of helping us get to where were at today, Arnold said.

Cubans watching closely US presidential race

Quiz Cubans on their new president and you're as likely to hear about Hillary Rodham Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama as Raul Castro.

Many believe any changes the next American administration makes to its Cuba policy will be more important to their happiness than any reforms the island's first new head of state in 49 years may embrace.

A 32-year-old named Pepe was sipping straight rum from a small plastic cup on a bench near Havana's Central Park when asked about his country's new government.

"What about a new U.S. president?" he responded. "Do you really think Obama can win? Will he get rid of the blockade?" he wondered, referring to the U.S. trade embargo on the island.

Seated nearby, his pal predicted that undercurrents of racism and sexism would push McCain to victory in the November election.

Just When You Thought the Corporate Media Couldn’t Get Any Worse

Rockerbabe1's comment about how "You boys are all the same. . .nothing good about any woman running for office comes out of your mouths" reveals that shallow, knee-jerk quality I've come to expect from so-called feminists.

I've been on the receiving end of similar "analysis" at least twice before in my life, and both times did little but undermine my confidence in the merits of so-called feminism.

Once, a college girlfriend called me a sexist—because my CD collection ran too "male-heavy." (I thought I liked my favorite bands because of how they sounded and because their lyrics spoke to me, but I was wrong—it was all really about their genitals.)

The other time was in a graduate course on Methodologies in the Study of Comparative Religion.

Dining, Roman-style, as London dig finds history by the bucketful

Wine buckets, bowls and dishes with an elegant beaded design are among a spectacular Roman hoard of international importance that has been discovered in London.

Archaeologists have unearthed more than 1,100 objects dating from the first to third centuries AD that they described yesterday as unprecedented in size and scale.

The finds, which will give dramatic new insight into Londinium, the Roman city, include the most complete timber door to have survived anywhere in the Roman Empire, as well as shiny metal vessels in an exceptional state of preservation and the large-scale remains of an entire Roman streetscape.

There is a service complete with buckets, large dishes, handled shallow bowls, a set of three nested bowls, an iron ladle and a trivet.
