Has anyone had enough of people constantly back-lashing the BBC?

I don't have the perfect solution for this, but the French model seems a fair compromise. They have the TV tax added to their house tax (Council Tax) and the revenue is sent to their state broadcaster. Those premises that don't have a TV simply complete a form and sign it and a log of these properties is retained. Those on low incomes, or single occupiers, that qualify for council tax reductions, presumeably get relief on their TV tax. This sounds like a cheaper and more efficient and user friendly method of funding public service broadcasting, though clearly not perfect. It is the BBC and the government that are resisting the change and are clinging to a system of finance that that was devised back in the early 1950s when there was only 1 TV station, which then was a rich mans toy. Is asking the BBC to wake-up and appreciate things have changed a lot in the last 60 years considered back-lashing? They should remember that all TV viewers are financially shackled by the TV licence to fund them, while customers wishes on this subject are totally disregarded.

Ice Hockey: Kanka at the double as Bees put Raiders to the sword

But the margin of victory in their final group match gives them a decent chance of finishing with the best record of any team in the last four and therefore securing favourable home advantage in the second leg during the knockout stage.

Czech ace Kanka opened the scoring a little more than three minutes into the match.

And before the first period had ended, Bees had extended their lead to 4-0 thanks to Danny House, Shaun Thompson and Matt Foord.

It was no more than Bees deserved, having outshot the Islanders 24-1.

Goals from Jan Melichar and Peter Jasik made it 6-0 before ex-Bee Danny Hughes let fly with a trademark shot from point to get his new club off the mark.

Jasik, Melichar and Bees' man-of-the-match Jamie Line stretched the lead to 9-1, before Kanka wrapped up the scoring at 54.24.

Keeping Love Alive

Their most popular measure is the Passionate Love Scale. People are asked to score 15 statements about their lovers, such as, "For me, [blank] is the perfect romantic partner."

The work of Dr. Aron and his colleagues reflects growing collaboration between the social and neurosciences.

Days after Mrs. Tucker's brain scan, Dr. Brown, the neuroscientist, sat in her book-lined office looking at the results. "Wow, just wow," she recalls thinking. Mrs. Tucker's brain reacted to her husband's photo with a frenzy of activity in the ventral tegmental area. "I was shocked," Dr. Brown says.

The brain scan confirmed what Mrs. Tucker said all along. But when she learned the result, she too was a bit surprised. "It's not something I expected after 11 years," she says. "But having it, it's like a gift."

The scan also showed a strong reaction in Mrs.

LizFlix Reviews: Crazy Love

In the summer of 1959, the nation was shocked when twenty year old Linda Riss was attacked, blinded, and disfigured on the front steps of her home in the Bronx. The story became a sensation when it was discovered that the man behind the attack was Lindas ex boyfriend, thirty two year old, married, New York attorney, Burt Plugach, whod devised the assault so that no other man could have the woman hed lost. Crazy Love is director Dan Klores effort to recount the history of the romance, the violence, and the madness that eventually unfolded when Linda actually married Burt.

The perspective in Crazy Love is handed over to the people who lived through the insanity between Burt and Linda Plugach first hand: the couples friends, relatives, doctors, protectors, and of course Burt and Linda themselves.

Microfinance Boosts the Poor

There is a misperception that the "high" interest rates of microfinance gouge the recipients. To the contrary, borrowers benefit significantly despite "high" interest rates.

Why? Returns on investment for microenterprises are extremely high. Studies—including those by my own organization—have estimated returns from microenterprises fall in the range of 50% to 100%. When a borrower is earning such high returns, paying interest rates in the range of 26% (what SKS charges), or even higher, is perfectly acceptable to a borrower.

Such high returns exist in microenterprises because microentrepreneurs in the developing world run businesses (1) that primarily use family labor, which is more productive than hiring outsiders, (2) that have low infrastructure costs (e.g., village groceries are often home-front stores), (3) that are in the informal sector so there are no taxes and legal costs, and (4) where financial capital is a small percentage of the overall inputs, which are primarily labor.

Siblings charged with felony theft of CFRC gifts

Felony theft charges have been filed against three siblings accused of stealing presents from the Community and Family Resource Center just days before its annual Christmas dinner.

The siblings -- a 12-year-old boy, 11-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy, all from Lafayette -- were spotted on Dec. 18 carrying bags of wrapped presents from the nonprofit organization's southside center, according to documents filed with the charges in Tippecanoe Superior Court 3.

All three are charged with Class D felony theft in juvenile court. The 12- and 11-year-old also are charged with Class C felony burglary and Class A misdemeanor criminal mischief, accused of prying open the door to a locked toy room where the presents were being kept.

Additional arrests are possible.

According to court documents, a community center employee spotted the siblings, two other children and an adult male walking together the night of the theft.

24-state battle for votes, delegates and momentum

The Holy Season of Lent is upon us. Can Obama worshippers try to give up their Helter-Skelter cult-ish qualities for a few weeks?

At least until Easter, or the Pennsylvania primary, whichever comes first…

UPDATE: Let me be clear: I'm not saying there shouldn't be enthusiasm in politics. I'm merely touching on the fact that some Obama supporters' exhuberance seems to be getting a little out of hand. Obama himself joked about this at a Hollywood fundraiser, as noted in Men's Vogue:

“When Morgan Freeman comes over to greet Obama, the senator begins bowing down both hands in worship. ‘This guy was president before I was,' says Obama, referring to Freeman's turn in Deep Impact and, clearly, getting a little ahead of his own bio.

65 jobs at risk in SimplySwitch closure

Daily Mail and General Trust is to close price comparison website SimplySwitch just 18 months after acquiring the business in a deal worth £22m.

The Daily Mail owner admitted that all SimplySwitch's 65 employees could lose their jobs and a consultation on redundancies has already begun.

SimplySwitch, which allows customers to compare rates for utilities, credit cards, telephone and broadband services, is expected to shut on February 20 after DMGT executives said it was not receiving enough traffic to generate profits.

DMGT's digital division, Associated Northcliffe Digital, struck a £22m deal - £16.5m in cash - in August 2006 to acquire the website as part of a strategy to reduce the parent company's dependence on traditional print advertising revenue streams.

Responding to the Jack Lynch Non-Story

Facts do not equal truth, and if you want to argue the position that they do, you will likely feel as if you won, but truth will have lost. It is a fact that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and we can make all sorts of observations about this and make claims such as "the sun rotates around the earth" or "we are the center of the universe." More exploration, however, tells us that not only does the earth actually rotate around the sun, but the illusion of the sun's rotation originates with our planet spinning on our own axis. In general, newspaper work doesn't require this much exploration or science, and I would hope the Spokesman-Review would care more about whether they can be as accurate as possible more than they do about whether they can claim dibs on being the first to report on a topic.
