WCC NEWS: Service celebrates WCC's 60th anniversary

Gathered in a church dating from the 12th century, the World Council of Churches seemed like a relative youngster as it celebrated its 60th anniversary Sunday 17 February.

But His All Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, reminded the near-capacity congregation at Geneva's St. Pierre Cathedral that the WCC has accomplished much in its six decades.

"The Council has provided an ideal platform where churches with different outlooks and belonging to a great variety of theological and ecclesiological traditions have been able to engage in dialogue and promote Christian unity, while all the time responding to the manifold needs of contemporary society", the Orthodox leader said, speaking in French.

He acknowledged the challenges and "turbulent" periods in the Council's life, but said that dialogue resulted from those difficulties and has paved the way forward.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Rihanna Calls The Cops! Should Jay-Z Retire? Illseed's ...

Now the 19 year old is dating Josh Hartnett, some actor dude that's not Black. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I'd like a bit of Affirmative Action with the girl.

As Berean Academy faces yet more tragedy it teaches us about hope

Whether you are a praying person or not, keeping the Berean Academy community in your thoughts is important during this second term of the 2007-08 school year.

The school again has been faced with the kind of adversity schools would rather not face.

Once again, the school is dealing with the death of students. It’s coming on the heels of another community loss and, God willing, bringing to an end a set of challenges dating back to May.

Throughout the last year, the school has been teaching that being a Christian doesn’t automatically mean nothing bad will happen. But being a Christian can provide the inner strength to deal with tragedy when it strikes.

Nowhere is that more apparent than Berean Academy in Elbing.

The Christian school has seen tragedy during the last year and displayed the inner strength needed to deal with it as it comes.

The rise of British Girl Power

Despite Britain arguably producing some of the world's best bands, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Oasis, outstanding female artists have never really been the nation's forte. Until now.

There's a new wave of female talent coming through and these girls are really something to shout about.

Leading the way is Amy Winehouse. Although the 24-year-old released her critically-acclaimed debut album 'Frank' in 2003, it was 2006's 'Back to Black' which shot her to global superstardom. For the LP, she teamed up with producer of the moment, Mark Ronson, and her singles, including 'Rehab', 'You Know I'm No Good' and 'Tears Dry On Their Own', were heard on airwaves worldwide. Amy had finally arrived but admitted it was working with Ronson that finally enabled her to fulfil her potential.

Cougs struggle past Beavs

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Behind the wry smile, beneath the tan complexion, Tony Bennett's blood still simmered in a back hallway at Gill Coliseum on Thursday night. Yes, the 21st-ranked Washington State Cougars accomplished their ultimate mission – a 70-57 victory over Oregon State, sending the lowly Beavers to a school-record 14th consecutive defeat.

But the Cougars' play lacked sharpness, and their effort was void of spirit – two things the second-year coach won't tolerate.

Runs at crucial times, marked by the shooting of guards Taylor Rochestie (career-high 24 points) and Derrick Low (21 points) and the inside energy of Robbie Cowgill (nine points, 11 rebounds), carried the Cougars through this one.

"We got ourselves together, and came up with stingy defense at times, and made some plays," Bennett said.

Jason Kipnis slammed his third and fourth home runs of the season, including a grand slam over the Green Monster in center field. He is the 15th ASU player, the second since 2000, and 21st overall to conquer the 30-foot wall. Brett Wallace also has a grand slam in the early season .
