'Housewife' desperate to go back
I just talked to (co-stars) Felicity (Huffman) and Marcia (Cross). It's an odd time. It feels even weird promoting a movie. Hollywood feels like a ghost town. The studios are empty, nobody's working, it's weird. Awards season's dying." Longoria Parker says her production company had three TV shows in development at VH-1, ABC Family, and ABC, respectively, that were all at the pilot-writing stages, but they're now all shelved. "I welcomed (the strike) at first because I've been working for five years non-stop so for someone to go, 'Stop working,' it's been nice. But now I'm like, 'Okay, enough vacation,' " she says. I just recently gotten back from the tournament in Miami, Oklahoma and just got done with one of the hardest practices of my life. But, I think I am good enough to write a blog. Something to Take to Heart Tonight, after practice, I saw this little blonde headed boy that I see around town constantly. You wanna know where I see him everytime? On the basketball court. The kid, being about as mature as you can be at his age. He is probably a 2nd grader, and he walks around town as if he was 15. Something is noticable though everytime I see him. First of all, I have yet to ever see his parents. Secondly, he doesen't seem to be the most lucky kid when it comes to who has the money and who doesen't. Living in a poor family as a kid, I know how that can be. But, everytime I see him around the court, he doesen't normally say a word to me but he will give me a little head nod.
Roberts off and running for Orioles in 7-5 victory over Florida
JUPITER, Fla.: Baltimore Orioles leadoff batter Brian Roberts was off and running Friday, to the annoyance of Florida Marlins pitcher Mark Hendrickson. Roberts started the Orioles' 7-5 victory with a leadoff double in the first inning against Hendrickson and promptly stole third. He stole third again in the third inning against Rick VandenHurk. On Thursday against Florida, Roberts stole two bases in the first inning. Hendrickson took exception to the aggressiveness so early in spring training. "I wanted to yell at him, go, 'What are you doing? Getting your legs in shape?'" Hendrickson said. "He steals a lot. That's part of his game, so more power to him, but it's one of those things." Roberts shrugged off Hendrickson's reaction. .
S Korean president calls for closer ties with Japan
President Lee Myung-Bak on Saturday called for South Korea and Japan to stop feuding over their history and build ties to bind the two neighbours closer together. In a speech marking the 89th anniversary of a 1919 popular uprising against Japanese colonial rule over the Korean peninsula, Lee said South Korea must not be caught up in disputes over history. "We face too many challenges for us to look back. We should not let ourselves be bound by the past," he said. Lee, who was inaugurated on Monday, said pragmatism should be the dominant theme in all fields ranging from politics and economics to security and diplomacy. "South Korea and Japan should also try to foster a future-oriented relationship with a pragmatic attitude," he said.
Michelle Obama Retools "I'm Proud" Remark
Obama himself gave a similar explanation during an interview Tuesday with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas. Expressing frustration that his wife's remarks had been taken out of context and turned into political fodder, the Illinois senator said, "What she meant was, this is the first time that she's been proud of the politics of America, because she's pretty cynical about the political process, and with good reason, and she's not alone. But she has seen large numbers of people get involved in the process, and she's encouraged." Michelle Obama was campaigning in Rhode Island two weeks before the state's March 4 primary. She planned a rally later with her brother, Craig Robinson, the coach of the Brown University men's basketball team. MMVIII The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.
Bears, Orton agree to one-year contract extension
Orton started 15 games his rookie season in 2005 and helped the Bears make the playoffs, but then sat as a third-stringer all through the 2006 season during the team's run to the Super Bowl. He started three games last season. "I'm sure you (reporters) all know it has been difficult for me and sometimes I handle it better maybe than other times. But that stuff is in the past and I think I've got a great opportunity here for the future and would love to make the best out of it and have a nice, long career here in Chicago," Orton said. The Purdue graduate completed 43 of 80 passes (53.8 percent) for 478 yards with three touchdowns, two interceptions and a passer rating of 73.9 in three games at season's end. For his career, Orton is 190-of-368 for 1,869 yards with nine touchdowns, 13 interceptions and a passer rating of 62.2.
Second-class and lost in the post
Because as soon as you put it on a computer, a bloke in an office can download it and stick it in an envelope and send your most personal details and mine and our children's across the country with a dodgy courier. It is shocking, it is risible, it is hilarious. Someone gave a disc containing confidential data about 25 million people to a bloke on a bike? And he lost it? Of course, a case of mass identity or financial fraud would never happen in this way. It is too chaotic. Fraud will happen through a far more organised infiltration of the official systems; but what yesterday's revelation does is underscore the insecurity of those systems. And allows us to giggle at the po-faced pretence of those in authority that they are any better at protecting us than we are ourselves. This is the pretence at the heart of every state attempt to tighten up national security — through searches and ID cards and barricades and banning water in airports and making us take our shoes off.
Ron Paul's one-night stand
Jared speculated that for every one person who joins Republicans and quickly bolts after the caucus, there will be several who will stay. So it's a net, long-term gain to bring new folks into the fold, he said. So how much of a movement does Paul have underneath the numbers captured by traditional polling? Nobody knows. "Anything new moving in that we're attracting is not being measured in that," Jared said. (Contact M.E. Sprengelmeyer at sprengelmeyerm@shns.com) .
Rotten to the Corps: A Question of Justice at Texas A&M
Sunrise was hours away when Zach Corcoran and three friends returned to The Exchange, an apartment complex for students in College Station. Zach and the others were drunk. The drinking had started at dinner, followed by more drinks and shots in the Northgate district, a strip of bars and restaurants across from Texas A&M University. The only sober person in the group was Leah Cook, who shared an apartment with Katherine Helle. The drinking continued at The Exchange. Leah and her boyfriend, Reid Ashton, argued in her bedroom. Zach sat in a love seat and slipped on a pair of Leah's sunglasses. Katherine stepped outside to make a phone call. About 3 a.m., Eddie Helle and his friend Steven Ramirez, both members of the Corps of Cadets, arrived at the apartment. Eddie grabbed a bar stool and sat down.
