Report casts doubt on Ericson's Pyramid plan

Commissioner Steve Mulroy, who has pushed for full consideration of the Ericson plan, said he'll be "astonished" if Bass Pro Shops officials show up. Officials of the Missouri-based outdoors retailer announced their store plan in February 2006 but have given few specifics since and have yet to commit to the project.

A development agreement -- which requires city and county approval -- calls for another year of study and planning by the company.

"We'll study the Ericson proposal side by side with the Bass Pro proposal," Mulroy said. "I personally think, from what I've seen so far, if you do that kind of fair, balanced study, everything seems to weigh in favor of the Ericson proposal. But I'll keep an open mind."

Lipscomb, however, strongly pushed Bass Pro as the most viable option, citing reports from a national consultant and the work of the local committee formed in 2004 to study arena reuse.

Amy Winehouse pwns the Grammys

Amy Winehouse scored five Grammys last night: Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year for "Rehab," Best Vocal Album and Best Pop Vocal Performance. She accepted the award live via satellite from London. Her visa request was denied but then accepted at the last minute. Amy chose to perform closer to home. Us Magazine reports:

After accepting her award, an emotional Winehouse, who was joined on stage by her dad and mom, thanked her parents, record label and "incarcerated Blake" — her husband, who has been behind bars since last last year.
"I can't believe I've won 5 awards. It's a shame I couldn't be there to accept the awards but I'm so proud and happy that I had the opportunity to perform for the Grammys in my hometown of London with my family and friends around me," she said.

What Thanksgiving means to me

But our modern-day feast does in fact mirror the meal shared between Colonists and natives in 1621, long before Thanksgiving became a household word and turkey was elected the food of choice.

"It was a three-day feast," said Chris Rasmussen, associate professor of history at Fairleigh Dickinson University. "The Pilgrims were thankful for having food in their bellies. It was a remarkable event. Of course, they were fighting in 1622."

Credit for the federal holiday on the fourth Thursday in November goes to "Mary Had a Little Lamb" author Sarah Josepha Hale.

Hale, the editor of Godey's Lady's Book, a 19th-century publication the equivalent of today's Good Housekeeping, championed a national day of Thanksgiving.

"In 1863, right around the time of the Battle of Gettysburg, she wrote to President Lincoln and asked him to declare a national holiday for Thanksgiving," Rasmussen said.

James notches his 100th victory for Penn State tennis

(UWIRE) UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Michael James is as humble as they come.

Not even 100 career victories can change his mentality.

"I mean, yeah, it's nice," James said of the milestone, which he reached Saturday during the Penn State men's tennis team's 6-1 win over Cornell. "I don't dwell on it too much. I'm just trying to get this team in the right direction."

And maybe he helped do just that.

The victory at the Reis Tennis Center was the Nittany Lions' first on the road, as it moved them over .500 at 3-2.

"It was important," James said. "We needed to bounce back after the tough loss last week."

The Lions did just that, as they swept the doubles matches and won five of six singles matches. However, none were as significant as James'.
