Balsam firs thrive in state’s bogs

The dictionary describes the word “bog" as a poorly drained wetland area with acidic, spongy ground, made up of dead but largely undecayed sphagnum moss (peat) and other plant matter. Being an admirer of plants, especially rare and endangered ones, I think of bogs as home to many of these very rare plant species in Pennsylvania. The balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is a prime example of a tree species that can only be found in a few scattered bogs across Pennsylvania, with one being right here in northwestern Lycoming County. Bogs are some of the most unique and interesting natural features found throughout our local landscape. They are unquestionably few and far between, especially south of the river, but a few of these special places can be found in the Bald Eagle and Rothrock state forests to the south and west, with only one of them known to contain balsam fir, known as Bear Meadows Natural Area in the Rothrock State Forest in Centre County.

Gary Coleman Says He and Wife Have Not Yet Made Love

Coleman played down their age differences, saying "I don't have issues with age, I have issues with intelligence ... She's more intelligent than I am and that's what matters to me."

Price, who is 5-foot-7, and Coleman, who is 4-foot-8, also played down their height gap.

"That doesn't really matter to me," she said. "He was 10 feet tall to me because he was sweet and I really liked his personality."

TCs unhappy with Paris meeting

He said consumers were getting an upgraded service for the right price.

Akel says the arguments against the deal have been "unconvincing".

The Watchdog Committee is to compile a report on its findings and submit it to the plenum next week.

It remains unclear what the cost will be at the sharp end of subscriber fees for the enhanced selection. Plus what incentive would there be for 70,000-odd subscribers to stay loyal to pay-TV channel LTV, if miVision viewers are getting more choice for less cash.

But the furore has turned more into a political dogfight rather than one that has the real interests of the viewing public at heart.

Quash

Claims the semi-government utility faces financial doom if the deal falls through have also been scoffed at by Disy.

Kotsay won’t play in Andruw’s shadow

Safe, not so much. Kotsay's a gamble. If he can play 150 games, it pays off. If he's closer to the career-low 56 he played last year, the Braves have a problem.

(Kotsay wasn't injured Thursday. He reported early and played in Wednesday's exhibition against Georgia. Long bus rides to Vero Beach tend to be bad for backs, so Cox rested him.)

Kotsay never had a back issue until 2003, when he crashed into the wall at Colorado while playing for San Diego, putting him on the disabled list with a sprain. The following year with the A's, he played in 148 games and batted a career-high .314. But the back worsened the next two seasons. In 2006, he missed 25 of Oakland's final 51 games.

He added yoga stretches to his conditioning program. But the herniated disc in his back wasn't receptive.

What Good Will A Swedish Lawsuit Against The Pirate Bay Do?

Thanks to all the publicity that TPB gets, I now browse new stuff there about once a week. When a new game or movie comes out that I feel compelled to try, I usually go find a demo on tpb before I go check out the website. As for music, well, my beatles collection was completed years ago... So I have no idea what the music scene is like on tpb.

Joining Facebook takes a few clicks, but leaving's another story

Are you a member of Facebook? You may have a lifetime contract.

Some users have discovered that it is nearly impossible to remove themselves entirely from Facebook, setting off a fresh round of concern over the popular social network's use of personal data.

While the Web site offers users the option to deactivate their accounts, Facebook servers keep copies of those accounts indefinitely. Indeed, many users who have contacted Facebook to request that accounts be deleted have not succeeded in erasing their records from the network.

Disruptions force up coal and iron

FINANCIAL markets may be sweating on a US recession, but prices for Australia's bulk mineral exports, coal and iron ore, are soaring as a spate of supply disruptions reveals just how tight markets are.

Floods in Queensland and power cuts to mines in South Africa have reduced supplies from key coal exporters, while China is cutting coal exports to manage production for its own soaring power demand. There were reports last week that ships seeking to load coal had been turned back from China's largest port, Qinhuangdao, after heavy snow and rain sent power consumption soaring and hampered coal transport. In South Africa, power cuts to industry could last up to four weeks, as utility Eskom battles soaring demand and tight coal supplies as it is forced to compete with strong export markets for local coal.
