Talks Could Resume Between Hollywood Writers & Studios
In its tentative deal with producers, the Directors Guild resolved new-media compensation issues that are also central to the Writers Guild dispute, including compensation for movie and TV projects delivered over the Internet. In a joint statement Thursday, top executives from eight major companies, including Fox, Paramount Pictures, The Walt Disney Co., CBS Corp., Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros., MGM and NBC Universal called on the Writers Guild to join in the kind of informal talks that preceded the directors' negotiations. The executives said the deal with directors established a precedent for the industry's creative talent to "participate financially in every emerging area of new media." Officials at the Writers Guild were waiting to receive a copy of the directors' tentative pact and evaluate how it fits in with what writers are seeking.
Kings notes: Bibby adjusting to Atlanta
Bibby said he's more than comfortable with the pressure on him. "I want it to be on my shoulders," he said before the game. "I'll take the blame. Not many people can say that. I'll take the blame." Woodson said there's no better approach than Bibby's. "That's a good starting point," he said. "He's a 10-year (veteran) who's (under) a lot of pressure to come in and help us get to the playoffs, and that's huge. A lot of guys would run from it. For him to say those things says a lot about his character and how he feels about playing this game." There were plenty of games inside the game, especially between Bibby and Francisco García late. García repeatedly bumped Bibby on the floor while wearing a guilty grin during dead-ball moments and even pretended to lose his way during Bibby's fourth-quarter free throws in an attempt to distract him.

Jessica Simpson not exactly up on current events
Jessica Simpson co-hosted The View yesterday but didn't really talk much when it came to current events. She plugged her new fashion line then resorted to her trademark blank stare for the rest of the show, according to Page Six: "She was never intended to be on the show as a moderator," noted an insider who alerted Page Six to the episode. "It was all a big plug for her label - Jessica barely even talked to the guests." I think Jessica Simpson should've been allowed to talk to the guests. You know, just to see her head explode when one of them tried to explain what a newspaper is. “So, what do you mean?" she'd ask. “You, what's the word, read? You ‘read' the words and it puts ‘facts' in your head about what's happening in, what was it, the world? I don't feel so good." KERPLOW! If that ever happens, I hope her breasts survive.
Could city secede?
As he sees it, the inability to compete with two Ontario provincial casinos just across the border has cost the community thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenues. "Port Huron is at a crossroads, literally and figurative, for its future survival," he said. The casino issue is back before Congress, where the 48-member House Natural Resources Committee has scheduled a vote Wednesday on a bill that would clear the way for a gaming facility at Desmond Landing or the Thomas Edison Inn. City fades, falters The notion of secession raises any number of questions, including an obvious one: Is Carter serious? He insists he is. "You've got to be able to call their bluff," he said. "If you think it's worth pursuing, you'd better be ready to take the final step." Carter, a native of Croswell, moved to Port Huron with his family when he was 11.
Wall St ends mixed as investors eye rate cuts
US STOCK markets ended mixed overnight although the leading Dow Jones Industrial Average finished higher for the fourth straight trading day as investors set their sights on lower interest rates. The Dow stock barometer finished up 62.59 points or 0.47 per cent at a preliminary close of 13,374.32, but off earlier highs which had seen the index soar by more than 100 points. Technology stocks lost momentum as the Nasdaq composite fell 7.17 points or 0.27 per cent to 2660.96. The broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 11.65 points or 0.79 per cent to a preliminary close of 1481.37. The Dow remained in positive territory following a speech by Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke late yesterday in which the Fed chief warned that strains in the financial markets may lead to broader economic problems.
Fraud victim? Banks clash over blame
I want to nail one myth: it is not impossible to go to the police to report an incident. An individual is still entitled to go to the police, but the first port of call would normally be the financial institution.' The Government is currently in the process of establishing a national fraud reporting centre, which will investigate any incidences of under-reported card crime. Official statistics indicate that the majority of people still contact their bank about card crime rather than the police. There were 59,000 cases of bank fraud reported to police in 200607, but nearly 2.3m reported to Apacs during the same period. Have you had your bank account or credit card defrauded? Did you contact your bank, your local police station or both and were you happy with their response? Please e-mail alan.o'sullivan@thisismoney.co.uk with your story.
India's 'brand freaks' delighting in the deluxe
I'll spend my whole salary for a really swank brand and eat idli [steamed rice cakes] for the rest of the month." This country's growing middle and upper-middle classes have recently given rise to self-described "brand freaks" who crave the latest luxury goods. In this city -- where the father of the nation, Mohandas Gandhi, once located his austere ashram and rejected foreign textiles -- it's Chanel, not homespun cloth, that generates excitement these days. India's elite have long enjoyed luxury goods imported from the West. In recent months, though, Indians who can't afford $600 sunglasses -- but who still have some disposable income -- have been splurging. Designers including Prada, Jimmy Choo, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, as well as brands such as Rolls-Royce and Mont Blanc, have either set up shop or beefed up operations here.

Baxter last month announced the voluntary recall of nine lots of multi-dose vials after learning of adverse events in dialysis patients, but the details of the outbreak were not disclosed until the CDC released the information. Doctor Alex Kallen , part of the CDC team looking into the illness, said the heparin has been tested for bacteria and endotoxin, but neither was found. Kidney patients receive heparin to prevent clotting of blood during the dialysis process. CDC officials said allergic-type reactions occurred within minutes of starting dialysis. The symptoms included facial swelling, nausea, rapid heart beat and decreased blood pressure. Baxter officials said when announcing the recall that some of these reactions may be severe or life threatening.
Hillary tries to jump start losing effort
Clearly the wheels are coming off the wagon of her once, "well oiled" political machine. For years now, she's been arrogantly running as the presumptive nominee and has gotten quite comfortable in that role. Now that real voters (particularly the independents) are starting to actually take notice and cast real ballots, she's quite naturally pissed that some young "upstarts" are polling better than she is. After all, it IS "her turn", right? Americans are also tired of political dynasties. First it was the Bushes and then the Clintons and then the Bushes again. We all know where the Bush dynasty has now led. And, no matter what Hillary says or does, people will always associate her with her philandering President husband. What's more, the Bush/Clinton dynasty now stretches back WELL before entire generations of new voters were born.
Berkeley: Facing Off Over Marine Corps
Before boarding the Huey helicopters to make an air assault on another 'search and destroy operation', our company stood in formation listening to General Westmoreland's pep talk about how well the 'war' was going. He said (in his own words) the war would probably be over in about six more months or so. He also told us how well the ARVN (Army of South Vietnam) were doing. When he said that, we began looking at each other, nodding our heads in disbelief, having run joint operations with them. So much for the draft, Westmoreland, McNamara, and the rest of the gangsters of that era. The real heros of that adventure in American Imperialism were the college kids at Berkeley and at other colleges and universities as well who said ' HELL NO, WE WON'T GO! " Lt. Ehren Watada is the first American military officer hero of the 21st Century.
